About the creator

Doctogenic was created by Erik Romano, MD, who graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine and participated in its Innovation Medicine (IMED) program. Before medical school, Erik graduated with a BS in Computer Science and worked as a full-time software engineer. Doctogenic was wholly designed, programmed, and authored by just one person under the company name Roscoe & Romano. (Roscoe is his dog.)

My personal message

Before medicine, I believed that if I worked hard enough and put in enough time, I would do well. Medical school changed that. Working hard was not the limiting factor; there was just never enough time. The challenge was learning efficiently enough to keep up, while understanding the material well enough to remember it.

But that kind of learning was harder when the resources I used explained conditions unevenly. One might describe the symptoms well but leave out the pathophysiology. Another might focus on diagnosis but say nothing about treatment. Some conditions were reduced to a single sentence, leaving me with a name to memorize rather than a concept I could understand. I was trying to build a framework, but I often had to piece it together myself.

I created Doctogenic to make studying more organized and efficient. My goal was to present conditions in a consistent structure, so students can compare them side by side and build a clearer mental framework. I wanted each condition to be framed the way it would be approached clinically: What would I expect in the history? What would labs or imaging show? What is happening physiologically? How is it treated? Can it be prevented? What comorbidities or related conditions should I keep in mind?

Doctogenic is the resource I wish I had in medical school. I hope it helps you learn with more clarity and less frustration.
