It primarily affects older adults and is associated with a poor prognosis due to progressive respiratory failure. The disease is distinguished by a usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) pattern on histology or high-resolution CT. The pathogenesis involves repeated alveolar epithelial injury and aberrant wound healing. IPF is clinically significant because it leads to chronic hypoxemia, respiratory insufficiency, and increased mortality.
