It is most commonly caused by highly virulent organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus that adhere to previously normal or damaged valves, leading to the formation of large, friable vegetations composed of bacteria, fibrin, and inflammatory cells. This condition results in valvular destruction, systemic embolization, and a severe systemic inflammatory response. Acute IE typically presents with high fever, chills, and signs of sepsis, and it progresses rapidly without prompt antimicrobial therapy. The disease is a medical emergency due to its potential for causing heart failure, septic emboli, and death.
