This enzyme deficiency results in the accumulation of uroporphyrins and other porphyrinogens, which are photosensitizing compounds that cause cutaneous manifestations. PCT is often acquired due to factors such as alcohol use, hepatitis C infection, estrogen therapy, or iron overload, although familial forms exist due to mutations in the UROD gene. The hallmark clinical features include photosensitivity, blistering skin lesions, hyperpigmentation, and hypertrichosis on sun-exposed areas.
