The disease is marked by an increased risk of both thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications due to abnormal platelet function and count. Bone marrow biopsy typically shows increased megakaryocyte numbers with characteristic morphology. It is important to distinguish this disorder from reactive thrombocytosis and other myeloproliferative neoplasms. The clinical significance lies in its potential to cause serious vascular events and progression to myelofibrosis or acute leukemia.
